Danny

Danny is the founder of DJS Research. He set up the company as a sole trader working from his spare room in 2001. After the birth of his first child, DJS Research moved to an office in the garden (or a shed, as friends sometimes joke!).

Since 2001, Danny has helped the company grow organically every year, including many years of double-digit growth. It now has a turnover close to £8 million with over 100 permanent and temporary staff. The company has achieved everything on its own (with no external funding) and continues to stand out as something different in the industry.

As the Market Research Society says, DJS Research is "One to Watch!" Danny strives to make DJS Research a better place to work for everyone. He has helped implement a number of initiatives to improve the company for its loyal employees. To measure their success, the MyDJS employee engagement score increased from 78% to 88% – still not perfection, but getting there!

In July 2021, Danny and Ali (his wife and co-founder of the company) sold the majority of the company to its employees and transitioned it to become employee-owned, ensuring the legacy and independence of DJS Research for years to come – something quite different in an industry where independence is now rare.

At the same time, he moved into a Chairman role. Danny is part of the DJS Research Employee Ownership Trust Board, which oversees the journey of employee ownership and ensures the company is run in the best interests of its employees (Partners).

In 2025, Danny was awarded a fellowship by the Market Research Society, the highest accolade given in recognition of his achievements in the sector.

The Operational Board is responsible for the day-to-day running of the business and developing the company’s business strategy. They are also fully hands-on, winning and delivering research projects.

Our Managing Director, Alastair Gleed, and several of our board members are founding figures of DJS Research, having joined in the early post-shed era of the company (intrigued... read about ‘the shed’) and have been in research since the previous millennium! In Spring 2024 we introduced a new scheme to bring fresh thinking and new energy into our boardroom, welcoming three new board members on a rotational basis. Both the initiative and the new members of the team were warmly received, and it's already paid dividends as the trio have had a hugely positive impact company-wide.

The role of the Trust Board is to ensure DJS Research is run in the best interests of all Partners and meets its legal responsibilities. It works closely with the Operational Board, offering strategic challenge and oversight.

Our company founder, and former Managing Director, Danny Sims, sits on the Trust Board, continuing to share his knowledge and experience garnered from over 30 years in market research. Financial oversight is provided by Finance Director, Rich Slater, while HR Manager, Lucy Pawson, champions the voice of our people through EO Voice – our employee council which represents the views and interests of everyone across the company and provides a direct route to both company boards. Our external Independent Trustee Director, John-Paul Simpson, provides an important and entirely neutral perspective on company matters and brings invaluable employee ownership expertise from his own business. His role is to protect employee interests, uphold company values, and ensure accountability across leadership.
