Environment & sustainability market research

Our excellence conducting environmental market research is underpinned by our extensive track record across the public sector, delivering successful projects concerned with issues relating to our natural environment for a wide range of public organisations. From work with regulatory bodies to central and local government departments, our public sector team have covered a huge variety of environmental topics from the impacts of flooding and climate change to recycling habits, nature recovery and fishing!

Our team have many decades of experience designing and managing large-scale environmental research programmes, which incorporate a range of qualitative and/or quantitative methods, as well as leading and analysing public consultations on matters relating to the natural world around us. We take the time to get to know our clients, ensuring we have a deep understanding of any/all related policies as well as key project objectives from the start.

Our projects are designed with end goals firmly in mind and with full cognisance of the broader landscape of environmental and social concerns, and resulting pressures, that surround them. We pride ourselves on formulating impactful outputs which are fit for purpose for all stakeholders, delivering valuable and actionable insight which helps shape public policy and aids decision making.

A selection of research outputs for clients within the environment & sustainability sector

Recent examples of projects concerned with environmental issues for public sector clients include:

  • Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra): We have worked with Defra on a number of specific market research projects to help support the organisation’s campaigns on littering (Keep Britain Tidy) and taking measures to help reduce the costs and impacts of flooding.
  • Met Office: DJS Research is a trusted partner of the Met Office, managing their annual Public Perceptions Survey as well as supporting on a number of other ad hoc market research projects in recent years. The survey provides vital insights which enable the Met Office to keep abreast of market changes and ensure that it continues to meet user needs.
  • Public Health Wales: Our extensive work with Public Health Wales includes a face-to-face CAPI survey (with telephone and online boost) of 2,000 adults across Wales exploring perceptions of climate change and the impact of these changes on public health.
  • The Environment Agency: We have a hugely successful track record working with the Environment Agency across a range of public attitudes projects, including the 2023 and 2019 public flood surveys and, most recently, a nationally representative survey of 2,000 adults in England exploring attitudes towards angling. We achieved a representative sample by using a mix of telephone and online surveys. Our key outputs included regression/key driver analysis to identify the biggest predictors of participation in the sport.
  • Oxfordshire County Council (OCC): As well as working with OCC to deliver several surveys over many years, concerned with issues such as local transport and public health, we recently worked with the council to assist them with analysis and reporting of a public consultation they had conducted themselves. The consultation was conducted via an online survey to gather public opinion to support the development of their Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS). Our work included comprehensive open-text coding the council's semi-structured survey. Our team produced a comprehensive report and illustrative infographic based on the analysis, and also worked closely with OCC and other stakeholders to deliver a webinar to those involved in the consultation.
