Business & enterprise market research

UK businesses have faced many challenges in recent years from the impacts of Covid-19 and Brexit, to rising costs of overheads and materials, widening skills gaps and mounting staff shortages. New technologies, including AI and developments in robotics, present fresh opportunities for many organisations but are viewed as a clear cause for concern by others. In this demanding landscape, it is vital that policymakers are equipped with the insight to fully understand the diverse, multilayered needs of UK businesses and the volatile landscape in which they operate. Our public sector team draws on their rich experience to craft research solutions that deliver actionable insight, informing the development of critical interventions and support functions which enable businesses to survive and prosper.

With business professionals under more pressure than ever in the workplace, sparing the time to participate in market research is rarely at the top of their priority list! We recognise how stretched and time-poor business audiences can be and this appreciation has helped us identify the most successful routes to reach and engage them. Our field and recruitment team have extensive experience recruiting niche business audiences, from owners and MDs, to other senior professionals. Our interviewers are also highly skilled in engaging the full spectrum of business cohorts, including both internal and external stakeholders.

Recent market and social research projects conducted by our public sector team in the field of business and enterprise have spanned a wide range of current issues from cyber security, skills development and the adoption of new technologies to business ownership models. From large-scale surveys with thousands of financial decision-makers in SMEs across the UK, to tightly focused deep dives into key industries to better understand adoption rates of new manufacturing tech, the breadth of our experience means we are able to work with you to devise a tailored research programme to suit your specific business and policy needs.

Delivering projects with clarity, professionalism and efficiency

Whether our research with business audiences is conducted by telephone, online or via other primary methods, our priority is to ensure professionalism and efficiency at all times. We do our utmost to ensure that everyone we engage is left with a positive impression of DJS Research and our clients, and the knowledge that taking part in our research has been a good use of their precious time.

We have a highly skilled and experienced in-house team of specialist B2B telephone interviewers, many of whom have worked at DJS Research for over a decade. The team are experts at engaging with senior decision-makers, getting through ‘gatekeepers’ (e.g. receptionists) and maximising response rates, whilst capturing high-quality data and insights to inform decision-making in the public sector.

DJS Research's business and enterprise projects in the spotlight

We have conducted a wide range of projects for central and local government, non-departmental bodies, regulators and other public sector organisations, focused on business, enterprise and innovation. Our work has included sector and audience-specific surveys and consultations targeting, for example, by business size, profession and/or region and engaging diverse groups from SMEs, health professionals and MPs to senior representatives of trade bodies and manufacturers. You can find a snapshot of some of our most recent and high-profile, projects below:

  • Cyber security of consumer IoT (Internet of Things) for the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT)Led by DJS Research, with support from the Centre for Strategy & Evaluation Services (CSES), this project involved a CATI survey (with online option), desk research and qualitative depth interviews to understand manufacturers’ awareness and readiness of new cyber security regulations. The deliverables from the research included a fully accessible report in GovSpeak Markdown format, for publication on gov.uk.
  • The GMCA Good Landlord Survey: A detailed survey with over 350 private landlords across Greater Manchester, conducted online and via telephone interviewing, accompanied by a similar study among tenants. The project aimed to deliver a robust understanding of the characteristics, views and experiences of private landlords, including their experiences of renting out properties; the process of looking for tenants; the key considerations when letting a property and assessing potential tenants; access to training; and confidence in dealing with issues such as compliance with gas safety and taxation. The insight generated has been fundamental in supporting the development of the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter.
  • Exploring digital maturity among manufacturers for the Welsh Government: In 2025 we were commissioned to undertake a robust and representative survey of businesses with manufacturing facilities in Wales, based on maximising response from a finite sampling frame which we helped develop. The survey, conducted primarily by telephone (with an online option) and offered in both Welsh and English, aimed to understand the uptake and impact of ‘Industry 4.0’ on the sector. The Welsh Government, working with Cardiff Business School, also wanted to identify any potential barriers towards digital adoption being faced by manufacturers, to help inform future support for businesses.
