Built to last? The state of children's palliative care in 2025

Together for Short Lives

DJS Research conducted a study in partnership with Together for Short Lives to provide a thorough overview of children’s palliative care in the UK. The aim was to identify the needs of families, assess how well these needs are being met, and highlight the ongoing variations in care provided across different NHS regions. Additionally, the report set out to highlight how the situation has changed over the past year.

Overview of methodology:

DJS Research adopted a two-step approach for gathering data and evidence to support the findings in this research.

  • Step one: 65 online interviews with families lasting 10-15 minutes.
  • Step two: one-hour in-depth interviews (via Teams or telephone) with 10 different families.

This two-step methodology allowed DJS Research to effectively measure families' current perspectives and experiences while also gaining deeper insights into their experiences and the factors influencing their opinions.

Together for Short Lives also issued freedom of information requests to all 42 integrated care boards in England (which have a legal duty to commission palliative care); which aimed to benchmark local service specifications against the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) quality standard on end-of-life care for infants, children, and young people.

The findings are published in full on the Together for Short Lives website.
