European education landscape: structure, technology & attainment

RM Results

RM Results commissioned VoicED, a specialist education market research team within DJS Research, to produce this report on the education landscape in Europe. The aim of this document is to gather and synthesise information on European education and assessment systems, presented in one simple to understand document, and to provide some points of comparison and contrast through several case studies of interesting or uncommon situations.

The European education system comprises numerous aspects, with multiple elements intertwined within it and numerous facets which could potentially act as a focus for research and analysis. However, given RM Results’ proposition, this report focuses to a large extent on the technology within the systems, how those systems are structured, on the infrastructure at their disposal, and on how these elements are correlated with attainment.

As an organisation which partners with leading awarding bodies to modernise assessment, RM Results is also interested in the progress, and potential progress, of students and pupils, as well as any potential barriers to or enablers of future progress.

This report pays homage to those concerns through a review of the foundations on which national assessment structures are built, and the challenges and enabling factors which obstruct or facilitate improvements in the future, and through utilising PISA scores as a pan-European benchmark.

Key topics include centralised versus decentralised exams; marking of high stakes exams at a local or national level; information on IT and infrastructure across the continent; and comments on the influence of infrastructure on attainment.
