General Optical Council

The primary aim of the study was to track the UK public’s perceptions of eye-care services regulated by the GOC and to highlight how these perceptions vary across population segments, especially those with markers of vulnerability. The research also explored motivations, barriers and behaviours in relation to optical services.

Methodologically, the survey was conducted online via a consumer panel between 17 January and 8 February 2024, achieving a total of 2,035 completed interviews across the UK.

The sample was designed using interlocking quotas for age, gender and UK nation to approximate representativeness.

A key analytical technique used is Key Driver Analysis (KDA) on satisfaction with the overall experience of optician/optometrist practices; this regression-based modelling identified factors most strongly associated with overall satisfaction.

The report found that satisfaction with the professionals carrying out sight test/eye examinations was extremely high (92%).
