Countryside Classroom

Countryside Classroom wanted to understand more about teacher’s awareness around the issues mentioned above, their motivations – if any – to teach about them, and the level to which they are supported to do so in light of the barriers which may or may not hinder progress.

DJS Research were commissioned to conduct a wide-ranging literature review of research on this subject matter – this included publicly available material as well as material held by a number of Countryside Classroom partners and other relevant organisations. These were initially compiled into a database across the themes of farming/farm visits, learning in the outdoor environment, learning about the environment and sustainability, and food.

Following this, DJS Research completed an analysis of each resource in order to make connections across the key objectives outlined by Countryside Classroom (awareness, motivation and ability) which form the main subsections of this report.

This report summarises existing literature to understand more about teachers’ awareness around food, farming and the natural environment, as well as their motivations to teach about them and the level to which they are able to do so.
