United Utilities

The challenge

The mutual impact between United Utilities' activities and the environment, influence how water and wastewater services are delivered to households and businesses in the region. As part of this United Utilities wanted to understand customer views regarding climate change on the water and wastewater industry and understand awareness of, and expectations for, United Utilities in the effort to protect the environment and mitigate against the risks of climate change.

The approach

DJS Research conducted five online customer focus groups (one with future customers) and five in-depth customer Zoom in-depth interviews. Additionally, online interviews were conducted with household customers (945), business customers (100) and future customers (100), asking all customers to review and comment on stimulus provided by United Utilities.

The results

The insight provided United Utilities with both robust data and qualitative in-depth understanding of customers' and future customers' awareness and expectations of United Utilities' role and responsibility when it comes to protecting the environment and mitigating against the risks of climate change. Additionally, DJS Research provided United Utilities with the evidence it needed to make the case for investment strategies from the perspective of customers and future customers.
