Market research case study:
Baseline expectations research

Electricity North West

The challenge

As part of its obligations to Ofgem, Electricity North West was required to set out the activities it planned to do to improve the services provided to major connections customers across three market segments (independent connections providers and independent DNOs, distributed generation low voltage, and unmetered other).

DJS Research was commissioned by Electricity North West to collect feedback from customers across the three market segments to understand whether performance was meeting, exceeding or falling below expectations. Where relevant, suggestions for improvement were also collected.

The approach

DJS Research was provided with a list of customers to contact from Electricity North West.

Interviews took place over the phone at a time convenient to the customer, and all were provided with a document which included details of baseline expectation measures ahead of the interview.

19 interviews were completed, with the following breakdown by market segment:

  • Independent connections providers/independent DNOs: 5.
  • Distributed generation low voltage: 6.
  • Unmetered other: 8.

The results

DJS Research provided Electricity North West with a summary of scores and any relevant suggested areas for improvement, as well as a raw data file of responses.

The outcome of the research suggested that Electricity North West was at least meeting, and in some cases exceeding baseline expectations for the majority of customers.
