UK footfall one and a half per cent lower in June 2015 than June 2014, figures show: Recent figures, from the British Retail Consortium’s monthly footfall monitor, have shown that UK footfall was 1.5 per cent lower in June 2015 than it was during June 2014.

The figures also revealed that footfall in shopping centres have decreased by 2.4 per cent and 2.8 per cent on the high street.

However, retail parks saw a 2.8 per cent year-on-year increase in footfall, a notable rise since the 1.4 per cent increase in May 2015.

Helen Dickinson, Director General of the British Retail Consortium, said of the findings:

“Retail parks have seen another increase in shopper numbers this month – which is good news for the retailers operating in these areas. However, the fundamental shift in the way people are shopping seems to be driving the sustained reduction in shopper numbers to both high streets and shopping centres. This is a clear demonstration that the re-invention of the high street is far from complete. The process of creating multi-use destinations in the heart of our towns and cities needs to continue in earnest if people are going to be drawn back to the high street. This has happened in some areas, but the energy and effort behind sharing best practice needs to be redoubled.”

All regions of the UK saw a decline in footfall, however, the most prominent decreases were in Northern Ireland (3.5 per cent decrease) and Wales (3 per cent decrease).
