Two-thirds of construction companies have used new technology during lockdown, according to survey

July 2020

Two-thirds of construction companies have used new technology during lockdown: A survey of construction middle managers has found that almost two-thirds (66%) have rolled out some form of new technology within their organisation since the onset of COVID-19 and nationwide lockdown.

The research conducted by construction management software provider, Procore Technologies, questioned 250 managers working in UK firms with more than 100 staff. It found that the majority of respondents (94%) had noticed improvements in the way their teams worked following the introduction of new tech.

The research found that the COVID-19 pandemic is accelerating the digital transformation of companies, with almost six in ten (58%) managers saying workers are looking to stay better connected. More than half (52%) also said that technology has enabled their employees to stay safer, and making social distancing and health and safety regulations easier to follow.

Looking to the future of the construction industry, the survey revealed that eight out of ten managers (80%) believe that platform technology will play a role, with almost half the respondents polled saying they wouldn’t be able to perform as well in their roles without it. The findings also revealed that 86% said that if they could use “one platform”, they would.

Brandon Olivieri O’Connor, director of UK and Ireland at Procore UK&I, said:

“We’ve seen contractors proactively making the move away from manual methods and excel towards platform technology. Construction won’t be the same as it was before, with connectivity and mobility driving a new way of working.”
