The growth in the UK male skincare market is coming to a halt

July 2016

The growth in the UK male skincare market is coming to a halt: Recent studies suggest that the UK market grew by just 1.3 per cent last year to reach a new value of £104m. This may seem like good news in a tough climate, however, following 8 per cent growth in 2014 and 13 per cent in 2013, it is pretty poor.

Skin care product manufacturers were reportedly found to be in denial that the market is shrinking. However if skincare companies ‘up their game’ then they may see the success that they have experienced in some categories. To illustrate this, the research said that 33 per cent of men use facial cleansers and 35 per cent of men use lip balm, so it could be said that skincare companies have some room for development.

What some people may find interesting is the beard care category. According to recent statistics, 18 per cent of men use a beard wash or oil. It could be argued that the beard care products are not evenly spread across the country, with 34 per cent of Londoners using these products but as you go further north, the usage seems to decline quite sharply. This is a good chance for companies to look into the male grooming sector, to exploit the market in the places where the products are not as common.

The researcher said that the male grooming trend may take a while to die out, with many young boys in their teenage years looking up to role models such as David Beckham and Tom Hardy, who both are well groomed and have facial hair.
