Survey uncovers best British beach: Following a recent public poll, Port Enyon Bay on the Gower Peninsula in Wales has won top place in the 2011 Cadbury Flake 99 Great British Beach Awards.
The idyllic location won over a shortlist of beaches from eight regions across the UK, thanks to its beautiful scenery, rolling hills and busy seaside shops. Port Enyon Bay was also given the prestigious Blue Flag Award for cleanliness.
In total, Port Enyon took 41% of the public vote, with Whiterocks in Portrush as the runner up at 34% and Broadstairs in Kent reaching third place at 14%.
Ioan Richard, The Lord Mayor of Swansea, accepted the award at the winning location, and praised the winning result as a major boost for local tourism.
This is the second year running that a Welsh beach has earned the Great British Beach Award – Rhossili Bay won the accolade in 2010.
The other beaches shortlisted by those who took part in this year’s poll were Holkham in Norfolk, Plockton in The Highlands, Robin Hood's Bay in Yorkshire, Southport in Lancashire, and Weymouth in Dorset.
