Survey shows UK crawling at snails pace in workplace gender equality: Survey results released today by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) have shown that the UK is only seeing ‘glacier’ progression towards gender equality in the workplace.
Titled ‘Ambition and Gender at Work’, the ILM report which surveyed 3 000 managers reveal that almost three-quarters of the women (73%) believe that the glass ceiling exists and say there are still barriers for women looking to be appointed to senior management and board-level positions in the UK.
It also found that 44% of women aged over 45 believed their gender has hindered their career progression, compared to 38% of men who felt that way.
The report commissioned by the Government Equalities Office predicts that at the present rate of progress, it could take six decades for women to gain equal representation on the boards of FTSE 100 companies.
According to the ILM survey, women are also more likely than men to aspire to run their own businesses. In total, a quarter of women under 30 are planning to start their own business within the next 10 years.
