Survey shows risks of using non-registered gas engineers: Research released by Gas Safe Register, the government approved registration scheme for gas engineers in the UK, suggests that unqualified engineers are putting lives at risk with poor workmanship.
According to the organisation’s website, “By law, you must be on the Gas Safe Register to carry out gas work in United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey.” However, the research revealed that more than one in ten (12%) of UK homeowners would willingly use a non-registered engineer in order to save money.
Across the past twelve months, 690 gas appliances were tested by GSR, representing a fraction of the number of appliances worked on by non-registered engineers. Of these, 93% were found to be potentially unsafe, and a fifth (19%–132 appliances) were categorised as being immediately dangerous due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Gas Safe Register has launched Gas Safety Week to raise awareness of gas safety issues and carbon monoxide poisoning.
