Survey shows almost half of parents plan to visit a museum this summer

June 2014

Survey shows almost half of parents plan to visit a museum this summer: With the summer holidays beckoning parents are putting plans in place to keep their children entertained during the six week break, and trips to museums have proved a particularly popular choice with 47% of parents intending to visit one this summer.

This surge of interest can be partly explained by an increase in consumer confidence as a result of the UK’s improving economic status. Nick Kennett, Director of Financial Services at Post Office, has said: “The significant rise in parents’ spending this summer may be due to families feeling a renewed sense of confidence as the signs of economic recovery take hold.”

However, in contrast to this suggestion, the survey found that almost three fifths (58%) of parents were worried about how much they may spend over the summer. Moreover, it would seem that parents feel under pressure to keep up with the spending of other parents, with nearly half (46%) admitting to this anxiety.

In addition to museum trips, 42% of parents are expecting to spend significant amounts on eating out and almost three in ten (29%) have plans in place to take their children on holiday abroad. On average, parents anticipate a total spend of almost £500 in trying to keep their children amused over the course of the summer.
