Survey reveals the concerns of cyber security professionals

April 2015

Survey reveals the concerns of cyber security professionals: A survey by the research group, Ponemon Institute, has found that 2 in 3 cyber security professionals are struggling to sleep at night, due to them not knowing the location of sensitive data.

It was found that the location of data was more of a concern than that of hackers, or mistakes of colleagues, which worried a quarter of the 18 per cent of the respondents, who are cyber security professionals.

Senior Vice President and General Manager of security vendor, Informatica, Amit Walia, said of the findings: "Data security represents a fast-growing market opportunity, projected by analysts to grow by 17 per cent a year, and reach $1.2 billion by 2018.

"The growing societal demand for strengthened data privacy and anticipated legislation around cyber security, including notification of data breaches and data residency laws, are just two reasons why data-centric security is becoming such an important tool."

Over half of the respondents said that securing data was of a high importance, and a similar figure said that they had experienced a data breach in the past 12 months.

Just one fifth of the cyber security professionals questioned said that they would be able to detect data breaches at all times.

Cyber security professionals also cited temporary contractors as a concern, as they presumably are not as trustworthy as permanent employees and also the implementation of mobile or cloud platforms, which can put data at risk.

The findings also highlighted a desire for automation tools to help tackle these issues, with 73 per cent of the respondents believing that automation would improve data security at their workplace.
