Survey reveals the books Britons love most

September 2011

Survey reveals the books Britons love most: A poll of more than 6,000 Britons for World Book Night has uncovered the nation’s best-loved books, with Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird topping the list.

The World Book Night survey asked people to submit the top 10 titles they most love to read, give and share. More than 8,000 books of both classic and modern varieties were suggested.

The top 100 titles will now be presented to an editorial committee. Together they chose the final 25 top ranked books which have now been revealed. These titles will be given away for free on 23 April next year at the World Book Night event.

The findings so far have seen Harper Lee's classic about racism in the American south receive 676 votes. Second place went to Pride and Prejudice with 521 votes, followed by Markus Zusak's children's novel The Book Thief (489), Jane Eyre (415) and Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife (405).

Julia Kingsford, Chief Executive of World Book Night, commented on the poll results: "It's wonderful to see the passionate choices of so many people and, above all, the diversity of those choices. We had always expected there to be a wide range of books nominated but to have so many titles chosen is a great reminder of the power and passion of individual readers."
