Survey reveals huge rise in the number of parents home educating their children

December 2020

Survey reveals huge rise in the number of parents home educating their children: A survey of 151 local councils has found that the number of children who have been taken out of school to be home educated has risen by 38%.

The survey by the Association of Directors of Children's Services (ADCS) found that the number of children who are being home-schooled has risen by an estimated 54,656 a year – standing at an estimated 75,668. The top reason given for home-schooling their children was 'fears over Covid-19'.

According to the ADCS some parents are planning to send their children back to school once the pandemic is over, while others said that they made the decision to school them from home after a positive experience during the first Covid-19 lockdown.

The research by the ADCS also revealed that a quarter of children and young people who were registered for Elective Home Education (ELE) on 1 October 2020 had been signed up since the new term started in September – although this is also an estimation.
