Survey reveals gaps in recycling awareness for unwanted household items

October 2012

Survey reveals gaps in recycling awareness for unwanted household items: Survey findings released by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Furniture & Electrical Stores, the UK’s largest charity home retailer, has shed light on the current attitudes and activities of Britons living in the North of England when it comes to moving home.

Two thirds of the respondents (66%) said that moving house was a stressful time for them, while 26% admits they’ve delayed moving because of the cost and 7% said they were moving back into the family home.

On the other hand, despite the recession, almost a third of people from the North of England (31%) are moving to a bigger property, with 54% of people preparing to fork out for new items – the top three purchases are sofas (59%), beds (55%) and chests of drawers (40%).

Furthermore, the study revealed that the average person from the North will move house five times during their lifetime, and those that pay to get rid of unwanted household possessions are spending an average of £88 each time or £440 during a lifetime.

This points to a lack of awareness when it comes to recycling unwanted household items, since over a third (37%) of respondents were unaware that charity shops accept furniture and electrical goods.

Regional Manager Barry Greenstreet commented: “It is worrying to see that people from the North of England are paying on average nearly £90 to get rid of unwanted household items, when so many are perfectly re-usable.”
