Survey measures most and least affordable 2013 holiday getaways for Britons

January 2013

Survey measures most and least affordable 2013 holiday getaways for Britons: A new survey by Post Office Travel Money has revealed the cheapest and most expensive holiday destinations for Britons in 2013.

The Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer surveyed 42 locations and measured such factors as in-resort prices for a shopping basket of eight items including drinks, sunscreen and a meal for two.

Spain has once more been crowned as the cheapest European holiday destination – the cost of eating out there has decreased by 50% compared with five years ago. It shares first place with Sri Lanka, although the country's weaker currency helped to offset recent price hikes at beach resorts.

Meanwhile, Australia is one of the most expensive holiday breaks to head to as buying holiday essentials there will cost four times more than in Spain. A typical meal out for two along with a bottle of wine will set holiday-makers back by £106 in Australia, compared with £22 on the Costa del Sol.

Furthermore, the global market research unveiled good news for travellers on a budget, since prices are have been reduced in a third of the destinations surveyed, particularly at restaurants and bars.

For city breaks, Eastern European cities were found to be significantly less expensive compared to Eurozone cities. The usual expenses such as a three course evening meal, sightseeing bus tour and two nights for two adults in a three-star city centre hotel would cost £234.16 in Bruges and £225.96 in Paris, compared to £102.39 in Prague and £109.34 in Budapest.
