Survey highlights lack of knowledge on HIV and AIDS

July 2014

Survey highlights lack of knowledge on HIV and AIDS: A recent study, conducted by the charity MAC AIDS Fund, has raised alarming concerns surrounding the knowledge and awareness of HIV and Aids.

The survey, which questioned 1,000 individuals, discovered that one third of 12 to 17 year olds wrongly believe they cannot contract HIV through unprotected sex.

Furthermore, almost nine in 10 did not think they were at risk of getting HIV or Aids at any point during their lifetime.

More than two fifths (42%) said they had never spoken about HIV or Aids.

In addition, almost two fifths (37%) thought drinking and smoking posed greater risks to their health, compared to the three in 10 (27%) who said that having unprotected sex could be harmful to their wellbeing.

The findings from the survey have resulted in MAC AIDS Fund now pushing for better education on HIV and Aids.
