Survey finds Scottish teachers one of hardest workers in the world: A global survey by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which measured how hard education professionals work, has found that Scottish teachers have one of the heaviest workloads in the world.
Teachers in Scotland rate in fifth position internationally for spending the most hours in the classroom. On average, they spend 855 hours a year in the classroom across primary and secondary school, which is a fair amount higher than the global equivalent.
In comparison, the international average ranges from 782 hours per year in primary schools, 704 hours in lower secondary and 658 hours in upper secondary.
While Scotland ranked in fifth position for classroom hours spent teaching in lower secondary school, it preceded Argentina, Chile, the US and Mexico. Britain featured 17th in the listing, which is close to the global average.
Nevertheless, in terms of salary increases across OECD countries, between 2000 and 2010 Scottish teachers received a pay boost of 21% in real terms, which rates as the seventh highest in the study. This figure represented 4% more than the international average. In England meanwhile, teaching salaries saw an increase of 9%.
