Survey discovers baking revival amongst younger generation

October 2011

Survey discovers baking revival amongst younger generation: Coinciding with National Baking Week which runs from 17–23 October, survey results have today been released which surprisingly demonstrate that a baking renaissance is being driven by the younger generation.

The study of over 1,000 people in the UK and Ireland by Leisure Range Cookers found that 16 to 24 year olds are six times more likely to bake something from scratch every day compared with any other age group.

In comparison, only 1% of the over 55’s surveyed bake every day and one fifth of the older generation bake no more than once a month.

Popular shows such as The Great British Bake Off have inspired 77% of those polled to bake more and 43% of families to bake at least once every fortnight.

The poll also revealed the top five baking creations enjoyed by Brits – topping the list was Apple Pie, followed by Victoria Sponge, Fairy Cakes, Chocolate Brownies  and Cheesecake.

In addition, people from Wales were found to be best in the kitchen with over half of those surveyed in the region reporting to be equally good at cooking as they are at baking. London was at the bottom of the list for Britons who bake, and it was the Scots who admit to being terrible at both cooking and baking.
