Study shows England’s hopes and interest for the World Cup have reduced

June 2014

Study shows England’s hopes and interest for the World Cup have reduced: A study completed by YouGov has shown that England’s hopes and interest have diminished ahead of this year’s World Cup.

At the end of 2009 Paddy Power’s odds for England to lift the trophy were 11/2 this year, however, their chances have been slashed down to 28/1.

In 2010 4% believed England had a very good chance of winning the competition and 31% felt they had a fairly good chance. This time round though, just one in 100 say the country has a very good chance, with only 7% believing they have a fairly good shot.

Four years ago 18% felt that England had very little or no chance of winning the World Cup, and this has since doubled for their 2014 challenge with 40% now ruling them out as title contenders. People’s thoughts on England having fairly little chance of winning has remained fairly similar from 2010 (30%) to 2014 (32%).

Findings also suggest that overall interest in the competition has dropped too. Back in 2010 people tended to be interested in the World Cup: 54 were compared to 46% who were not; four years later though, and now people tend not to be interested with the ratio slipping to 47%–53%.
