Smile survey finds British public slacking on dental hygiene

May 2011

Smile survey finds British public slacking on dental hygiene: From the 15th May to the 15th of June, Britain will commemorate National Smile Month – a survey to compliment the theme by Wrigley has shown however that an alarming percentage of the UK population are neglecting their oral care.

The national campaign is being supported by celebrity chef John Torode, who has spoken out on the importance of a good dental routine and is concerned about how “the majority of people only consider their oral health in the mornings and evenings.”

Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter, commented: “Whilst we all know that some of the foods and drinks we consume throughout the day can be bad for our teeth, little attention is paid to establishing an oral care routine that will protect our mouths throughout the day.”

In total, 95% of those polled ignored the effects of their lunch time meals on their dental health and 94% where not paying attention to their oral care after dinner.

In addition, when it comes to being open about oral health, just 9% of Brits felt comfortable discussing the subject with friends and 24% with their own family.

The people surveyed were also asked about their favourite tasty treats – chocolate come in as top with 51% of the poll, followed by Sunday roasts at 45% and a curry at 25%.
