Research reveals Android winning UK smartphone popularity race: A new study conducted by YouGov on behalf of Intelligent Environments has shown that Google’s Android operating system has nudged ahead to top place over Apple’s iPhone.
Android has now secured 28% of the UK mobile user market compared to rival Apple’s 26% user base. Blackberry is ranking third in the race with 14% of the mobile market share, while Windows at 5% and Symbian at 6% are faring less well.
The four million strong user base for the Android OS consists of a varied selection of professions and age groups across the business and consumer market, with a quarter of the retired choosing Google’s system.
Director of Mobile for Intelligent Environments, James Richards, commented: "It's fair to say that iPhone and BlackBerry have strong identities but given that Android is on a number of handsets, we are clearly seeing more of a mixed user base."
While Android might currently be the most popular smartphone in the UK, Apple users are more attached to their devices, with 18% of iPhone owners spending more than four hours a day using their smartphones, compared to just 4% of Android and Blackberry users.
