Poll uncovers current social media habits of Britons: A poll of behalf of online bank First Direct has questioned 1,500 UK adults to find out about the current social media habits in Britain.

The nation is now spending approximately 62 million hours each day on Facebook and Twitter, with the divide being around 34 million hours on Facebook and about 28 million hours on Twitter.

Drilling down to a more granular level, almost a third (30%) of UK Facebook users are on the network for at least an hour a day, with 13% spending over two hours on Facebook daily. In addition, almost a third (31%) of users spend more than an hour a day on the Twitter network, while 14% (equating to over 3.6 million people) report their daily usage exceeds two hours.

Facebook was voted as the primary social media platform by 59% of people, while only 9% named Twitter as top, followed by 7% who prefer LinkedIn.

The poll also revealed levels of competitiveness on different social platforms - 11% of Twitter users said it is important for them to have more “followers” on their feed than their friends, compared to just 4% of Facebook users who think it important to appear more “popular” than their friends.

In terms of gender, over a quarter (26%) of UK women on Facebook check their pages at least 10 times a day, compared to less than one in five (18%) of men.
