Poll shows public support for UK voting reform on the decline: Public support is moving away from the suggested historic reform to the voting system, according to a Populus Poll for The Times newspaper released today.
The results of the survey show a decrease in support for the alternative vote (AV) as a replacement for the first-past-the post system.
The poll figures indicate a major setback for the supporters of the vote and its “Yes” campaign, which includes Labour leader Ed Miliband and the Liberal Democrats.
Of the 2,052 adults who were chosen as a random sample to give their opinion, only 33% said they were in favour of the changes from the current system to AV – down 8% in recent months. A further 37% said that they would not be opting for the alternative vote, up from 29% in last February’s survey.
A total of 30% of the people who took part in the poll say that they did not know which system should be used for electing Members of Parliament to the House of Commons.
In summary, the percentage of people who say they do not want the new system introduced has risen by 8%.
