Poll shows current opinions of UK business leaders: The annual “Captains of Industry” survey by Ipsos Mori has revealed some of the perceptions that leaders of Britain’s largest companies have for the New Year.
Almost three-quarters of those polled fear the UK faces a prolonged period of stagnation, with 68% of the 103 chairmen, chief executives and senior directors who took part in the study believing it will take at least two years until the economy begins to grow significantly once more.
Nevertheless, directors are less pessimistic than a year ago – last year, 56% thought the economy would deteriorate, but currently only 12% think it will worsen in 2013 and 31% think it will improve.
When polled about who they think is the most impressive business leader in Britain at present, Sir Richard Branson came first for a second year running with a 13% vote, followed jointly by Justin King (Chief Executive of J Sainsbury) and Sir Martin Sorrell (Chief Executive of the advertising group WPP) at 9%.
Thereafter, 7% voted for the inventor Sir James Dyson and 6% named Stephen Hester (Chief Executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland).
