Poll shows British love of takeaways but points to health and money implications

December 2011

Poll shows British love of takeaways but points to health and money implications: According to the Benenden Healthcare Society poll of 2,000 respondents conducted recently, the average Briton will eat an average of 46 takeaway dishes each year, amounting to a spend of £17,250.

The study further revealed that most people in the UK will eat around 2,453 takeaways in their adult lifetime. This figure was calculated by measuring an average adult lifespan of 62.5 years, looking at the age group between 18 and 80.5.

Researchers also estimated that most Brits will eat 188 kebabs, 322 Chinese dishes, 368 pizzas, 375 burgers, 312 portions of fish & chips and 92 hot dogs during this life span.

The most popular reason given for the prevalence of takeaway eating was "Can't be bothered to cook" (36%).

Benenden Healthcare's Head of Communication, Lawrence Christensen, commented: "There's a curious obsession with takeaways in the UK and despite a precarious economic situation, they are as popular as always. Brits should be carefully considering their choices and asking whether a takeaway is really necessary. Not only is it a hit on the pocket, but it could be a fast track to a range of health issues."
