Poll finds most Britons angry over shocking rise in rubbish on streets: A nationwide poll for the Daily Mail has revealed the overwhelming consensus amongst Britons that litter is a major problem which needs to be tackled.
A total of 97% of those surveyed view litter as a problem which is damaging their everyday quality of life and 94% are angry at the sight of someone dropping rubbish.
Despite this, more than two-thirds of those polled at 68% claimed they would not challenge litterbugs for fear of a violent reaction.
Meanwhile, 2.3million pieces of litter are dropped on British streets every day, which then needs to be cleaned up by councils at the shocking cost of £885million.
The problem of litter in the UK has increased alarmingly, with the amount of rubbish being dropped on streets rising by 500% since the 1960s. In addition, litter on beaches has increased by a shameful 90% in the past eight years, which causes major damage to local wildlife.
The Daily Mail has initiated a ‘Spring Clean For The Queen’ campaign that ties into the upcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The public will be encouraged to take part in a clean-up to tackle Britain’s woeful reputation for having one of the worst litter problems in the developed world.
Last night, the Prime Minister himself joined a long list of celebrities and environmental campaigners who publicly support the Daily Mail campaign.
