Poll finds majority of Britons apprehensive about mobile payment technology: As mobile payment systems (NFC technology) are being prepared to hit the UK in a big way, a poll of over one thousand UK adults by Intersperience has revealed that only 17% (less than one in five) are interested in taking up this new mobile wallet scheme.
The study found that lack of public trust in this payment method lies predominantly in consumer fears over phone hacking and security issues – nearly half of those surveyed were worried about the lack of security software on mobile phones.
In addition, a quarter were also concerned that their mobile was more likely to be stolen than their wallet. While it is already tempting for thieves to steal a £500 smartphone, if it is turned into a mobile wallet, criminals are far more likely to target them.
Paul Hudson, CEO of Intersperience, commented: “There is no doubt that the phone hacking scandals have unnerved consumers. We also detected a marked rise in security concerns when people use devices with mobile internet access compared to fixed access via PCs. These beliefs will impact the pace at which UK consumers adopt mobile payment systems.”
