Poll discovers current British DIY attitudes

August 2011

Poll discovers current British DIY attitudes: In preparation for the upcoming last bank holiday of the year, when thousands of UK homeowners will spend the long weekend cracking on with decorating tasks they’ve been putting off, retailer Frogtape conducted a poll which reveals people’s DIY attitudes.

Top on the list for celebrities that Britons would most like to help decorate their property is DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles. Other people named were Lady GaGa, Take That front man Gary Barlow and Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles.

In total, 82.62% of those polled felt that painting the walls is one of the most cost-effective ways of sprucing up the home without breaking the bank balance, while the majority in control of choosing the colour are women, at 67.55%.

The study also revealed that more women will attempt to paint a room than men and that females are also less likely to botch this job than males.

In addition, two thirds of the respondents said that the bleak economic climate had made them more likely to attempt jobs themselves rather than hiring a professional tradesman, and  almost two thirds of men admitted they always give DIY a go, even though they don't think they'll be very good at it.
