Poll demonstrates public concern over cyber security in Britain: A study of 1,000 people on behalf of security information event management company LogRhythm has found that almost two-thirds of UK citizens support pre-emptive cyber strikes against foreign states that pose a credible threat to the nation.
Some 45% of all the respondents polled believe the UK Government needs to step up its protection of national assets and information against cyber security threats; while 42% think the threat of international cyber war and cyber terrorism is an issue that needs to be taken very seriously.
Only 18% of the surveyants consider pre-emptive attacks on enemy states to be unjustified, however of those that support this approach, 46% believe it is only warranted if the level of threat is high.
Furthermore, only 10% of respondents said the Government is doing enough to protect Britain from cyber security threats.
The poll also showed that there is public concern about the security of personal data – as many as 80% said they do not trust organisations to keep their data safe, with social networks and gaming sites ranked as the least trustworthy organisations.
A total of 65% of those polled think that organisations across all industries are not doing enough to keep their data safe; and 41% believe it is inevitable their personal data will be compromised by hackers at some point.
