Opinion survey reveals Mothers Day buying trends

March 2013

Opinion survey reveals Mothers Day buying trends: Market research by price comparison website PriceGrabber has revealed the current views and trends associated with Mother’s Day.

Firstly, it was discovered that Britons have mixed opinions about this traditional annual celebration – 41% of respondents felt that Mother's Day is 'a very important date as their Mum deserves to be spoilt' and 16% said 'it was up there with birthdays and Christmas'. Meanwhile, 15% acknowledged that they 'felt pressure to celebrate the date, as they didn't want to upset their Mum' and 28% stated that 'it's just another commercialised day to get you to buy things'.

In addition to these varying perceptions of what Mother's Day means, the survey also uncovered people’s buying attitudes for the occasion. A total of 54% of the respondents said 'they are going to spend the same as last year' and 12% claimed 'they would spend more'.

Of those who said they would spend more, 54% cited the reason for this increased spend was ‘for personal reasons', 17% claimed 'it was because there are better deals around' and a further 17% said 'it was due to improved job security’.

Furthermore, the study found that how Britons shop for Mother's Day is evolving – 48% of the surveyants said that they will be buying from a traditional High Street store, 40% said they will be purchasing their Mum’s gift online and 12% did their shopping on a tablet or smart phone.
