Only 17% of UK business travellers make sustainability their key priority when planning travel, finds survey

October 2023

Only 17% of UK business travellers make sustainability their key priority when planning travel: A new survey by Censuswide has found that only one in six (17%) business travellers make sustainability their priority when making plans for travel, with cost being the main priority cited (31%).

Travel convenience closely followed cost, with 27% stating that was their key priority when organising travel, whilst loyalty and reward programs also came above sustainability, with 21% of people revealing these were their main priority.

The research into the UK's business travelling industry was commissioned by expense management company, Emburse. It was carried out by Censuswide, who surveyed 1,003 employees and 254 employers. Additionally, only 26% of employees said they would cut down their travel to reduce their carbon footprint.

Further findings revealed that 71% of employees said their employer should do more to enable sustainable travel, with 76% saying they agreed that they would take a more sustainable mode of transport if there were financial incentives or sustainability programmes available to them.

Positives

Many positives were also taken from the survey results, with 38% of businesses reporting increased investment in sustainability, with 71% currently having a policy or guidelines in place. In addition, 43% of businesses are considering initiatives and incentives to encourage more sustainable travel, a positive sign for the future. However, out of the 71% of businesses with policies/guidelines in place, only 37% of businesses actively enforce these when booking travel and reviewing travel expenses, found the research.
