Ofcom survey reveals O2 best for UK mobile broadband speeds

May 2011

Ofcom survey reveals O2 best for UK mobile broadband speeds: Communications watchdog Ofcom has conducted a new survey to find the UK's leading broadband provider – O2 come out on top for speed, beating its four main competitors.

In total, 4.2 million tests were carried out to produce their results, which measured the download speeds and overall performance of the leading five mobile ISP’s in 3G networked areas.

O2 have invested heavily in the area of mobile broadband services, and by its proven performance over Orange, T-Mobile, 3 and Vodafone, it would appear that their investment has been justified.

Currently, 17% of UK homes are using mobile broadband services as opposed to a fixed broadband connection – this is a significant rise since 2009’s 3% and the figure is on the increase.

This is despite a fixed connection offering significantly faster broadband speeds that average 6.2Mb, compared to the dongle based speed of 1.5Mb, which means individual pages take an average of 8.5 seconds to load.

O2 were also found to be the ISP with the lowest latency than its rivals, meaning its connection is more responsive to users.
