New research suggests European smartphone users face price disparities compared to UK: New research in to smartphone tariffs has suggested that, in markets without a ‘maverick’ competitor – such as Germany and Spain - consumers pay an average smartphone tariff of 44 euros, compared to 22 euros a month in more competitive arenas such as France and the United Kingdom.
During the second quarter of 2013, Rewheel, an independent consultancy based in Finland, analysed six tariffs with mobile data provision of between 500MB and 4GB across all 27 EU member states. The study found that a mobile plan with 2GB of data and 200 minutes of call-time may cost anywhere from 8 euros in Estonia up to 45 euros in Greece or Malta.
Germany, which boasts the EU’s biggest mobile market, averaged 38 euros for a 2GB package – compared to around 20 euros in France and only 15 in the UK. Unlike the UK, which offers a wide range of providers, the German high-end market is dominated by Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom, whilst Telefonica and KPN battle for the budget end of the market.
