New research discovers a major increase of women working in IT: A poll by online commerce platform PeoplePerHour.com has uncovered a significant increase in the number of women working in the IT industry.
There has been a 165% rise in females working in the digital sector in total. Nearly half of those are in design and programming jobs, 10% in database development, 9% in web development jobs and a further 9% of women working in flash programming.
In particular, females are concentrated on the contractor market, with 80% of the women surveyed working as freelancers. Furthermore, The Drum has reported that these female freelancers are being rated on average at five out of five for the quality of their work by employers. This points to the fact that many women are carving their place in the IT industry while juggling work and childcare responsibilities.
Founder and Chief Executive of PeoplePerHour.com, Xenios Thrasyvoulou, commented on the results: "These latest figures provide the evidence that women have broken through the digital jobs glass ceiling and are now competing with men on both numbers of workers and on quality of work... The IT sector had predominately been seen as male dominated, but these figures show that women are easily a match for men in the sector."
