New poll reveals the typical lifestyle of British families: An ‘Alternative Census’ carried out by home energy management service AlertMe has uncovered the average day-to-day lifestyle habits of British families.
Chief Executive Officer of AlertMe, Mary Turner, commented on their survey of more than 2,000 households: "The government census tells us information that is quite run-of-the-mill and we wanted to find out the bare bones of people's everyday behaviour; what they eat, the car they drive, how much they spend and try to save... This study shows that many families and parents especially, are fairly conservative with their spending."
According to the poll, the average weekly food shop for most UK households came to £76.02, with a further £12 each week spent on alcohol. An average British family has £3,280 in savings and just over half have a mortgage, with the typical amount paid off on their balance at 32%.
In addition, the poll found British families tend to sit down for dinner at 5.54pm but only eat together three times per week. Half of all families who took part in the poll said their favourite form of entertainment is watching television – the typical family watches the box for nine hours every day and their favoured show is Doctor Who.
