Museums across Mexico, central America and the Caribbean fear for their survival due to pandemic, according to survey

October 2021

Museums across Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean fear for their survival due to pandemic: A survey conducted by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has revealed the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, with 75% revealing they are facing financial insecurity.

The UNAM polled 285 institutions across Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, finding that many institutions have been hit particularly hard, with 63% saying that a budget shortfall has put them in a vulnerable position and risk of being unable to properly maintain their facilities.

Whereas many museums around the world have had support to help the recovery of the sector, in this region there has not been the same help, which art historian and lead on the survey, Graciela de la Torre highlights as a leading reason for difficulties faced by cultural organisations in the region.

According to the survey, a third of museums polled in the survey had made reductions to their workforce, while 14% of employees in the cultural sector have been made redundant since the pandemic began.

The survey also found that the costs for digital projects have risen which has left some institutions finding it difficult to balance the books.
