Market research uncovers UK's best heritage attraction

August 2012

Market research uncovers UK's best heritage attraction: Which? Travel magazine conducted a survey to find out the top heritage site in Britain – rather than popular tourist landmarks such as the Tower of London or the Houses of Parliament, Stirling Castle in Scotland has won the crown.

The Which? respondents were asked to rate the UK tourist attractions they had visited in the past two years for overall satisfaction and likelihood to recommend, plus several other categories including value for money.

Stirling Castle, famous for once being the home to Mary Queen of Scots, received the highest poll scores for customer service, value for money and the quality of information provided to visitors.

Further highlights of the landmark include a set of replicas of the 16th century carved images called the Stirling Heads, depicting royalty as well as figures from the Bible and mythology.

Run by Historic Scotland, the castle is also currently home to James V's Palace, which has a reputation for being one of Britain's best-preserved Renaissance buildings.

Tourism Director at Historic Scotland, Stephen Duncan, commented on the survey accolade: "Stirling Castle was home to the Stewart kings and queens, arguably the most famous dynasty in Scottish history. It's fantastic to see the response by visitors who have visited the castle in their hundreds of thousands since the reopening of the palace, and to be recognised as the UK's favourite heritage attraction is a huge honour and testament to the hard work of all the team."
