Market research reveals most popular UK retirement spots: A new survey by insurer LV= has discovered the most and least popular retirement destinations in Britain.
The UK's retirement capital is the Isle of Wight, where nearly 42% of the local residents are of state pension age. Bexhill & Battle ranked second (34%), followed by Christchurch along with Louth & Horncastle in joint third position (33%).
Thereafter, Clacton, West Dorset and Chichester shared fourth position (32%), and East Devon, Suffolk Coat and North Norfolk all rounded out the top five (31%).
The survey respondents voted for proximity to family and good transport as the most important appeal of a retirement destination, with fresh air the second priority – all the areas which ranked in the top five offer a coastal and often rural setting.
Other important draws for people living out their Golden Years are things to do such as cafes and art galleries, while proximity to the picturesque countryside or the sea where also highly valued.
In contrast, the ten least popular retirement locations are all in major cities, led by the South and East of London, Glasgow and Birmingham. These include Bethnal Green & Bow, Hackney South & Shoreditch, Lewisham & Depford, Vauxhall and Glasgow North (10%), with Poplar & Limehouse the least popular since only 8% of the population there are retirees.
