Market research demonstrates poor knowledge of building information modelling: A survey by the National Federation of Builders (NFB) has shown that SME builders are ready to adopt building information modelling, but do not have the necessary skills or training to adopt it. Almost 3 in 5 (57%) of the 135 contractors surveyed (23 of which employed more than 250 people) felt that BIM would be beneficial to their organisation.
Among SMEs, almost three quarters (73%) had never been involved in a project which used BIM features such as 3D drawing tools or clash detection. In comparison, only fifth (21%) of larger contractors had not utilised these features. Furthermore, only a tenth of SMEs are planning to provide training with BIM systems to their employees, whilst more than half (52%) of larger outfits suggested they would be offering some sort of instruction.
Understanding of the different levels of BIM were low, with only a quarter of larger contractors saying they had considered the differing implications for differing projects, and only around 1 in 40 (2.7%) respondents from SMEs echoing this.
