2012 Olympic games light the way for the 2016 Rio games

November 2013

2012 Olympic games light the way for the 2016 Rio games: According to new research findings, travel executives expect to sell more holidays to the Rio Games due to the massive success of London 2012. Two fifths (39%) of the senior industry executives that took part in the poll say they are more likely to see holidays that coincide with the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics as a result of London’s 2012 event. Furthermore, almost 20% of UK holidays makers are expected to attend the Rio games, with the research highlighting this is high percentage as only 155,448 Brits travelled to Brazil in 2012.

The study also revealed the impacts that the Olympics in 2012 had on both London and the UK generally, the majority of those asked (64%)  said they had seen more interest in London as a tourist attraction with just over half (54%) saying they had seen more interest in the UK generally following the games. Following on from this over half of travel firms around the world have increased their capacity in London with two fifths (42%) having grown capacity in the UK.

Commenting on the findings, Simon Press (Exhibition Director at Reed Travel Exhibitions) said: “It’s great to see the success of London already having an impact on the 2016 Olympics and we wish Rio de Janeiro all the best for hosting the event”.
