International survey finds UK GPS score high for complex healthcare: A global healthcare survey covering 11 high-income countries has found the UK to be top when it comes to treating patients with complex problems.
The study in the participating countries included more than 18,000 adults age 18 or older who were in fair or poor health, had recently been hospitalised or had major surgery, or those who had had a serious illness or injury in the past year.
UK performance in primary care-centred systems was compared to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United States, across a set of five main criteria and 27 indicators.
The 2011 Commonwealth Fund health policy survey found that UK general practice ranked highest for quality of care, co-ordination of care, ease of access, the unique patient-doctor relationship and value for money.
Britain also scored top, equal top, or near the top in most of the 27 indicators.
Nevertheless, the survey authors said there was a need in all of the countries including the UK to improve co-ordination of care for patients with complex conditions.
