Horniman Museum and Gardens voted South London's top 'hidden gem' picnic spot: As picnic season is in full flow, a poll by Zipcar UK has revealed some of the top picnic spots across the capital to enjoy some al fresco dining in the summer months – with the Horniman Museum and Gardens scooping the top spot in the category of 'hidden gem' picnic spots in South London.
The Forest Hill museum, which has been open since Victorian times and boasts extensive 16-acre gardens, was placed ahead of Burgess Park in Camberwell, Eltham Palace Park, The Rookery in Streatham and Danson Park in Bexley Heath (in order of preference) in the poll of 1,000 people.
When it came to 'under the radar' picnic spots in North London, Waterlow Park in Highgate took the top spot, followed by Forty Hall in Enfield. In third place was Harrow View Point, followed by Gladstone Park in Dollis Hill and then Kenwood House in Hampstead.
The survey also sought to find out the favourite London destination for picnicking with a view.
Picnic spots with a view
Taking the lead and voted the favourite London scenic destination to enjoy a few sandwiches, cakes and drinks was Greenwich Park, famed for its breathtaking views of Canary Wharf and home of the Royal Observatory. The South East London beauty spot took over a third of the vote (36%) beating the likes of Primrose Hill in North London (19%) and Parliament Hill, Hampstead (14%). In fourth place was Alexandra Park in Haringey (13%) and South London’s Brockwell Park in fifth position, with 65 of the vote.
Hyde Park, Battersea Park and Richmond Park were also cited as favourite destinations for scenic picnicking.
