Health poll sees Britons struggling to meet five-a-day fruit and veg target

May 2012

Health poll sees Britons struggling to meet five-a-day fruit and veg target: The latest YouGov poll on behalf of the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has found that most Britons are failing to eat their five portions of fruit and vegetables a day as recommended by The Department of Health.

In total, just one in five respondents out of more than 2,000 UK adults surveyed claimed to eat the five-a-day target.

On average, fruit and veg consumption levels of at least five portions per day were lowest amongst lower income households at 17% as well as Britons living in the north of England at 18%.

This compares to 27% of higher income groups who eat at least five portions per day and those who live in the south of England at 26%.

The regional divide saw Wales ranking high at 23% of residents meeting the dietary target, 22% in Scotland and 21% in London.

The WCRF has said that the poll indicates most people still find achieving the dietary goal difficult, so they are urging the public to eat "just one more portion" for an increase in cancer protection.

The charity is also set to host an event to raise awareness called "Fruity Friday" on 18 May as part of Cancer Prevention Week.

Meanwhile, The Department of Health invested around £10m last year in their Change4Life campaign to encouraging healthier lifestyles.
