Cyber security survey shows UK companies struggling to tackle threats

April 2013

Cyber security survey shows UK companies struggling to tackle threats: A survey by recruitment company Robert Half Technology which questioned 100 CIOs across the UK has discovered that the risks surrounding IT security breaches continue to be a cause for concern.

In total, 78% of the CIOs who took part in the study said that IT security poses a challenge for their organisation.

Four in ten of the respondents have increased their company's security budget compared to three years ago, and of those, 55% have increased it by more than 25%.

Disturbingly however, it was revealed that public sector companies have proved to be slower at increasing their cyber security budgets to ward off threats – the figure stood at a 36%, compared to 42% in the private sector and 41% of publicly listed companies.

Overall, the escalating risks to cyber security, driven by advancements in technologies across both the public and private sectors, has resulted in CIOs now spending almost a quarter (23%) of their time managing IT security.

Managing Director of Robert Half Technology, Phil Sheridan, commented on the survey findings: "CIOs themselves are now spending more than one full day a week focused exclusively on IT security during a period where organisations are already doing more with less, with regulation, integration and migration projects putting additional pressure on busy IT departments."
